Ag. Director's Welcome Message

You are welcome to the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS) at the University of Ghana. IESS is one of the two Institutes within the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS). Our mission is to promote sustainable development through education, research, and advocacy in Environmental Science, Sustainability, and Sanitation.

Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies is committed to addressing the nation’s needs for transdisciplinary education, training, and research in environmental science, policy, and management within the broader African and global context. Our vision is to establish IESS as a leading academic center of excellence for Environmental and Developmental issues within the next decade, training leaders and experts to drive positive change in natural resource management, environmental protection, and sanitation practices. We conduct multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research across Africa and are eager to collaborate with partners on consultancy projects and grant applications.

Since its establishment in 2010, IESS has been at the forefront of interdisciplinary research and education, significantly influencing policy and practice in the environmental sector. We offer graduate programmes designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to address challenges such as pollution, waste management, mining impacts, deforestation, climate change, and coastal erosion.

Our graduate programmes include: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Science, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Environmental Science, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Environmental Sanitation, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Sustainability Science

The interdisciplinary approach ensures that our graduates are versatile researchers with a competitive edge in the job market, capable of addressing the complex challenges of sustainable environmental management.

We actively collaborate with diverse stakeholders and institutions across the globe to achieve our mutual benefits. Your involvement is crucial to our success, and we look forward to partnering with you to create a sustainable future.
